Top five 3G service providers in India

Although the race is far from over, current subscriber numbers indicate close competition among 3G service providers. Current standings are: BSNL, Airtel, Reliance, Docomo and Idea, in that order.

It has been just six months since 3G services were launched by private players in the country and the installation process is not even complete with many major towns yet to be covered by 3G networks. Yet, subscriber numbers already show decent uptake with more than 13 million people already using third generation telephony services.

Public sector units like BSNL and MTNL, which got 3G spectrum licenses a year ahead of private players and have been offering services for as long, failed to get many takers, which raised doubts as to whether 3G would be accepted by the masses.

iPhone 4 Indian Launch On 27th May At An Unbelievably Low Price ?

As cellular providers – Aircel & Airtel already confirmed the launch of iPhone in India very soon, we are still predicting about the launch date which could match with these words. Some of the solid sources have already inquired us that the iPhone 4 will land in India at an unbelievably low price. Does that mean sub 30k ? We already know that iPhone 3G S and 3G hit the Indian market with a price tag of above 30k and people really astonished when it crossed their expectations due to low prices in US. However, the doubts were cleared after the concept of contract from AT&T came into existence.

iPhone4 coming to India courtesy Airtel, Aircel

Last month Airtel and Aircel announced that they will launch iPhone4 in India, and now they have started a registration process for the consumers.

Aircel and Airtel will be the first operators to bring the Apple iPhone4 to India, who have started the registration process through their respective websites to keep potential buyers informed about the arrival of the handset.

However, no launch date or special pack has been announced for this launch yet. iPhone 4 is the latest version of Apple iPhone and comes with features like Apple's stunning Retina display, the highest resolution display ever built into a phone and FaceTime for video calling. Some 8 million subscribers of Airtel in Delhi had to face network outage last evening, when Airtel's network crashed. But the company has now assured that everything is under control.

Around eight million customers of Bharti airtel in Delhi had a hard time on Thursday evening, when their mobile phones services were disrupted due network malfunctioning. As a result Airtel subscribers across Delhi were not capable of making or receiving calls on their cellular phones.

She assured that problem has been rectified, though she did not disclose the exact nature of the problem.
During the outage, even customer care numbers where unreachable, causing much confusion. Personally, I thought my handset had conked off, as anyways it was giving me trouble with its touch screen not working properly.
It was only in the morning that I realized when I read in Twitter that everybody faced a similar problem.

Africa operations brings down Bharti airtel profits

Telecom major Bharti airtel, whose profit has come under severe pressure in the fourth quarter of 2010-11 due to higher cost of African operations, on Thursday said it is expecting the African arm to post a much better performance this year.
“Africa is a very competitive market and it’s been only nine months since we have acquired Zain’s African operations. The costs are very high in that region, but now we have a good presence there,” airtel Africa CEO and joint managing director Mr Manoj Kumar Kohli told reporters.
Last year, the company had completed the acquisition of Zain’s African operations in 16 countries for an enterprise value of $10.7 billion.
For FY’12, airtel Africa will make a capital expenditure in the range of $1—1.2 billion. The Government regulations are stringent but are now going down, the company said.
Mr Kohli admitted that the company is having supply constraints in Africa but assures that it will be taken care of. He added that the company expected operating margins of the African arm to increase in the coming quarters.
During the quarter ended March 31, 2011, airtel incurred a capital expenditure of $382 million on its African arm.
The group company Bharti airtel today reported 31 per cent decline in its consolidated net profit at Rs 1,400.7 crore during fourth quarter ending March 31, mainly due to high cost of African operations, re—branding expenses and high spectrum charges.
“The acquisition in Africa has turned airtel into the fifth largest company in the world in terms of customers,” Bharti airtel’s parent Bharti Enterprises deputy group CEO Akhil Gupta said adding that the revenue share in Africa is going up.
During the quarter ended March 31, airtel Africa had a loss of Rs 87.8 crore, while revenues stood at Rs 4,181.5 crore during the period. It has over 44 million customers across 16 African countries with average revenue per user at $7.2 per month.

Airtel 3G plans

Airtel had five lakh 3G mobile subscribers within seven days of launching 3G services, that too from just five cities. What makes it click with users? Here is an analysis of Airtel's 3G tariff plans.

Bharti airtel had five lakh 3G mobile subscribers within seven days of launching third generation telephony services(3G), and that too in just five cities. Now it has over two million 3G subscribers (as of April 6) in 34 cities and towns across India including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Coimbatore, Mysore, Manipal, Udupi, Jaipur, Delhi NCR, Hubli, Patna, Hyderabad, Agra, Dehradun, Meerut and West Bengal.

What makes it click with users? Here is an analysis of the operator's 3G tariff plans:

Airtel has a range of tariff plans for 3G customers, starting with a Rs 11 plan which gives 10 MB of usage for a day. The plans go up to Rs 750 for 2 GB data over 30 days.

But the sad part is that there are no real unlimited plans to choose from. As an alternative, the teleco is offering a Rs 675 plan, in which you get 1.25 GB data at full 3G speed, consumable over 30 days. Once you have consumed that, your access speed will drop to 20 Kbps and you will be charged 1 paisa for every 100KB till you reach a bill of Rs 2,000.

India has only 500 mn mobile users, not 800 mn

NEW DELHI, INDIA: The number of real, active mobile users in India has just crossed 500 million, according to a analysis of statistics released by telecom regulator TRAI along with industry data and inputs. This is much lower than the 811.59 million that is projected as the official number of mobile subscribers in March 2011, says a study.
According to Voice&Data, the Indian telecom Industry journal from South Asia’s largest specialty publisher, CyberMedia, the actual numbers are much below this projection. The study is based on the April 6 release of TRAI, which gave details about the cellphone connections in the country in February 2011.
A footnote tells the actual story
Voice&Data said a footnote in the April 6 release provides the first caveat: “Active wireless subscribers in VLR in February 2011 are 563 million”, pointing to the fact that the actual number of mobile users in India is below the 810 million or even the 791 million mark.
The VLR, or Visitor Location Register, is a database of the subscribers who have roamed into the jurisdiction of the mobile switching center (MSC) which it serves. Each base station in the network is served by only one VLR, hence a subscriber cannot be present in more than one VLR at a time.

3G Launch in India – Analysis of Services Rollout and Key Players Strategies

3G services have been launched by all the carriers (except STel) in India with multiple services and various sachet & usage-based tariff plans, with varying uptake. Globally, 3G services have been available for a long time (almost ten years in Japan). Carriers in various international markets have adopted different strategies while launching 3G services. While carriers in developed markets primarily focused on enterprise customers, carriers in developing markets (launching 3G relatively later) targeted retail consumers and offered the high speed wireless technology as a potential broadband option to the consumers.
Indian carriers (especially incumbent carriers) currently face multiple structural challenges such as congested networks and limited available spectrum (5MHz) to offer 3G enabled data optimized services at launch. Also, carriers’ “walled garden” approach to value added services and prevalent piracy and Indian consumers’ lack of willingness to pay for such services pose a huge challenge for immediate uptake of 3G services. However, once the 3G device prices decrease and the tariffs stabilize in the first two years, Knowledgefaber believes that the 3G uptake will rise in 2013 and reach over 90 million by March 2014.
