India adds 20 Million Mobile subscribers in March -2011


According to the latest report (March 2011) released by TRAI – India now has a total of 846.32 Million Telecom subscribers, comprising of of 811.59 Mobile subscribers & 34.73 wireline subscribers. The Indian Tele-density now stands at 70.89%!
If anything, the growth in mobile subscription is only increasing. Monthly Mobile Subscriber additions in last few months has been averaging about 17-18 million, but in month of March, subscriber additions crossed 20.2 million. Total Mobile subscriber base increased from 791.38 mn in Feb 2011 to 811.59 mn at the end of March 2011, registering a growth of 2.55%. 

Urban Vs Rural Mobile Subscribers
Urban subscribers are still going strong with 12.88 mn additions , while 7.33 mn rural folks were added to the tally! While the Urban Teledensity currently stands at 150%, rural teledensity is close to 33%. Essentially what it means is, in cities, for every 2 individuals there are 3 mobile numbers – And in rural areas, there is 1 mobile number for every 3 individuals!
For Pan-India telecom subscriber base, 66.65 percent subscribers reside in Urban areas, whereas 33.35 are in rural areas.

Mobile Number Portability Requests

Less than expected number of people actually took advantage of MNP in first couple of months of MNP launch. However, MNP requests are now picking up steam. 64.23 Lakh MNP requests were made in March 2011 as compared to 38.33 lakh in Feb 2011.

Abu Dhabi get complete OFC Network


Abu Dhabi is now the first capital city in the world to be entirely covered with a fibre optic network, UAE telecom giant Etisalat has announced. The completion of this project has contributed to the UAE being ranked amongst the top five countries in the Arab world in the Network Readiness Index (NRI) and ranked 24th in the world according to the Global Information Technology Report 2011 issued by the World Economic Forum, outperforming many countries, an Etisalat statement said. Fibre-optic networks offer revolutionary services and solutions which can meet subscribers' needs for decades to come. Etisalat Chairman Mohammed Omran said this milestone has put the country at the forefront of global telecommunications. "We are proud to announce Abu Dhabi as the first capital city in the world that is entirely connected to the fibre optic network."
Etisalat Acting CEO Nasser Bin Obood said the network is expected to have an impact in all sectors. "Our significant investment in this network, which amounts to approximately 6 billion dirhams, may have somehow impacted the net profits of the corporation in the recent past, but we are confident that this short-term impact will prove to be beneficial for many in decades to come. "It is an investment that directly impacts the countrys position and its network readiness, supporting the government's guidelines in enhancing and harnessing e-government tools and information automation," Bin Obood added.

MTNL Mumbai launches 10 Gbps Broadband on FTTH


Mumbai’s Largest Broadband Service provider Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) today announced the launch of path breaking technology Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) triple play High Speed Broadband service with speed up to 10 Gbps in Mumbai Telecom circle. MTNL FTTH Broadband service will also be launched in Delhi circle from 1st May, 2011.The commercial service will be launched in next couple of weeks in both circle. With the launch of FTTH technology MTNL can now offer High speed Broadband access up to 10Gbps and plethora of services based on Triple play(voice-video-data) services like IPTV, HDTV, 3DTV, video on demand , Bandwidth on Demand, Video conferencing , interactive gaming , and several other VAS which can be only possible through FTTH.
This technology uses optic fiber technology which can deliver world class Triple Play experience to the consumers the FTTH service relies on a Self-Healing Network,which is able to provide seamless triple play service, even in case of damaged of the optical fibre, the information will be re-routed through another line. The system deploys services involving voice, data and video communications irrespective of distance and location it provides all communication facilities by using broadband and land line network, including Internet access, IPTV, video-on-demand, content-based services, interactive gaming and VoIP services. The services will also support enterprise applications and features such as LAN, VoIP and video conferencing. MTNL’s FTTH Broadband Plans will start from Rs. 649 for Limited usage and Rs. 999 Mbps Unlimited Usage at 1 Mbps Speed. While 4 Mbps and 10 Mbps Speed Plans cost Rs. 3499 and Rs. 5999 respectively.
On this occasion Shri Kuldip Singh, CMD, MTNL, said “This latest set-up would provide impetus to the MTNL Data focused strategy and will be a new business stream for MTNL”.
